Capital Bikeshare Hits One Million Rides On First Anniversary

This notice comes to us from John Lisle:

Capital Bikeshare has more to celebrate today than a very successful year on its first anniversary. The popular bikesharing system hit 1 million rides this morning, marking two significant milestones on one day.

At 7:15 this morning, an annual member checked out a bike at 16th and U Streets, NW and docked it about 15 minutes later at Lamont and Mount Pleasant Streets. It was a well timed ride: it was the 1 millionth tripped logged on a Capital Bikeshare bike since the District and Arlington launched the system on September 20, 2010.

Also, since that first day, Theodore Melahropoulos has taken the most trips by a Bikeshare member, 1,258 – an average of more than 3 a day! – setting a one-year mark that could be hard to beat.

Both winners will be honored at the Capital Bikeshare Birthday Bash at The Yards Park on Thursday, September 22. For more information about the event, please visit godcgo.com/cabibirthdaybash.

The party was planned to coincide with Car Free Day and Capital Bikeshare members are encouraged to take the Car Free pledge at www.carfreemetrodc.com.  Festivities will include live music, food trucks, free cupcakes and Honest Tea, New Belgium craft beers for sale, games, giveaways, a photo booth and lots of raffle prizes. The festivities will be held rain or shine.

With more than 18,000 members and 1 million total rides, Capital Bikeshare has doubled the initial projections for the system. Project managers were aiming to attract 8,000 members in the first year and hoped they would take 500,000 rides.  Capital Bikeshare has quickly become a successful addition to the District and Arlington’s myriad transportation options over the past 12 months, as an inexpensive and reliable choice for residents, visitors and employees. The system currently boasts 116 stations and 1,100 bikes with more than 60 new stations planned in the next six months.

The Massachusetts Ave & Dupont Circle NW station saw the most activity since the system’s debut in 2010, with over 40,000 trips originating from that point.  Capital Bikeshare currently averages more than 4,000 trips a day, system-wide, and the Fourth of July holds the record for the highest daily usage, with 6,077 trips taken.
