DDOT Issues Notice to Proceed For Manufacture of New Streetcars

From John Lisle: District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has issued a Notice to Proceed (NTP) to Oregon Iron Works, Inc. to begin manufacturing two modern streetcars for the DC Streetcar system. The new vehicles will run – along with the three vehicles the District already owns – on the H Street/Benning Road line beginning in 2013.

“This is an important step forward for the streetcar project,” said Mayor Vincent C. Gray. “With work getting underway on these two cars we’re gaining more momentum towards the launch of this first line next year and to the goals laid out in my Sustainable DC vision plan.”

The District finalized a Cooperative Purchase Agreement last week which utilizes an existing contract for streetcar vehicles between Oregon Iron Works (OIW) and the city of Portland, Oregon. The vehicles will be built at the OIW/United Streetcar facility in Clackamas, Oregon.

“It is a distinct pleasure to work with DC Department of Transportation and the District in supplying modern streetcars to the citizens of Washington D.C.” said Chandra Brown, Vice President of Oregon Iron Works. “We eagerly anticipate the day our American built streetcars will be on the streets of Washington DC.”

Oregon Iron Works was founded in 1944 and now has more than $100 million in annual sales and 400 skilled craftsmen and support employees. It is the only domestic manufacturer of streetcar vehicles and has the only streetcar test track in the U.S. for testing vehicles before they are delivered.

The 2.2 mile long H Street/Benning Road Line will run from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue. It will be the first operation segment of a planned 8-line, 37-mile streetcar network serving all 8 wards of the District.

“I am pleased with this development, and happy that we are one-step closer to realizing streetcar service in the District,” said Councilmember Mary Cheh, Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Works, and Transportation. “It is my hope that we can get those cars here very soon.”

Ward 6 councilmember Tommy Wells added, "I am pleased that we now have a signed contract for the purchase of additional streetcars to launch the H/Benning streetcar line. These additional cars will support frequent and reliable service that is essential to the success of our streetcar network."
