For Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey of SCW Interiors in Alexandria, VA, www.scwinteriors.com, being included as one of the designers in the 2012 DC Design House is “the most prestigious invitation for a designer.” But it also means sprinting to the finish line. “Being selected to design for the showhouse is a bit like being crowned homecoming queen then having to run a marathon in your ball gown while collecting items for a scavenger hunt,” Cavin-Winfrey says. It’s also one of the highlights of one’s career, she notes.

Showhouse veteran Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Interior Design in Bethesda, MD, www.kelleyinteriordesign.com, who has participated in 21 showhouses over the past 11 years, says it’s still exciting to be selected. “I really feel honored to be a part of this fundraising event,” Proxmire says. “Children’s National Medical Center is a very deserving organization and should hopefully receive much needed funds from the DC Design House.”

Are You A Peacock or a Penguin?

On my trip to visit my daughters recently I took a few different books to read. The one I want to share with you is A Peacock in the Land Of Penguins. I believe everyone experiences a time in their life when they don’t fit in…when they want to stand up for themselves for being different from the rest of the pack. Some of us do, most of us do not.

Although this book focuses on the business world, the information is valuable from a business or personal perspective. When your view differences from others, how do you handle it? Are you confident? Do you stay silent or do you go along with the majority? Are you a peacock in the land of penguins?

Bouncing Back Baby!!

In the past few weeks I have focused on resilience because I know from my studies and working with clients the positive impact it can have on our lives. Below are two more skills that can support you in being more resilient. I believe learning to use these skills will help you recover from setbacks more quickly as well as creating a deeper, richer life.

Control or No Control.  Determine what you have control over and what you do not. On a piece of paper, make two columns. On the left side of the page, write Control and on the right side, Not Under My Control. Ask yourself:  What do I have control over? In that column, write down your answers. For example, you can control the television shows my kids watch, your own attitude, the religion you practice, who you choose to socialize with, and so on.
