Children Invited to Test their Safety Skills at the Homeland Security Festival

On Friday, September 10, the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency will host the Kids Preparedness Festival.  The event will be held at Takoma Recreation Center #3, located at 6300 3rd Street in NW, and will run from 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.. The festival will give children the opportunity to experience the challenges of being an Emergency Manager.  Attendees will be given the chance to “touch and climb aboard high tech public safety equipment”. Early Voting Locations In DC

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)--Beginning Monday, August 30th District voters, for the first time, will be allowed to do early voting.  This will last until September 13th for the Primary.

Early voting hours will be 8:30am through 7pm.  Voters can cast their ballots at the following location beginning Monday:

One Judiciary Square
441 4th Street, NW

Beginning on Saturday, September 4 from 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM, four additional early voting locations will open:

Chevy Chase Community Center
5601 Connecticut Avenue, NW

Hine Junior High School
335 8th Street, SE

Southeast Tennis and Learning Center
701 Mississippi Avenue, SE

Turkey Thicket Recreation Center
1100 Michigan Avenue, NE

Please note that early voting centers will not be open on Sunday, September 5 or Sunday, September 12. Voting locations will be open on Monday, September 6 (Labor Day).

 

Take a Walk Through History on the Brightwood Heritage Trail

Before the cold rush of winter strikes DC, take a walk through history on Brightwood's community heritage trail.

The trail begins at 5427 14th Street, which can be reached by taking Metrobus 70 or 71, and takes walkers throughout Brightwood, ending at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Peabody Street.

The trail is designed to take approximately 90 minutes to complete, but walkers can move at whatever pace they choose.

The walk is packed with the culture and history that makes Brightwood one of D.C.'s most distinct communities.

New Brightwood Vida Senior Housing Building Has Target Date of Summer 2011

The new Vida senior housing building that is being constructed in Brightwood has a target date of opening in the summer of 2011, according to Vida representatives.

The Brightwood location, which broke ground in July, will provide Vida with an additional 36 units of affordable  senior housing.  The building will be set on Missouri Avenue on what used to be a vacant lot.

The rental units will be spread throughout the four story building, and there will be a fifth floor dedicated to activities and services for residents.
